Experiencing Learning - Episode 5

The Curious Case of Instructional Design

So, What is instructional design? 💭

Can we put this industry into words?

Well according to ATD (Associated for Talent Development), instructional design, also known as instructional system design (ISD), is the creation of learning experiences and materials in a manner that results in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills.

The discipline follows a system of assessing needs, designing a process, developing materials and evaluating their effectiveness.

Therefore, instructional designers apply systematic methodologies (rooted in instructional theories and models) to design and develop content, experiences, and other solutions to support the acquisition of new knowledge or skills. Instructional designers ought to begin by conducting a needs assessment to determine the needs of the learning event, including: what the learner should know and be able to do as a result of the training or learning solution, and what the learners already know and can do.

Easy, right?🤨🤔

Not really, as almost every part of this description can be handled by either a person or a team to carry out effectively or YES certain instructional designers can be hauling all of that on their own.

And this is where the confusion comes into place. As new (or even veteran) instructional designers, what do we really need to do to carry out the job?

❇️ Where should we start?

❇️ What should we learn & Focus on?

Not to mention, should we be acquiring rigorous credentials to be able to do all that (or even part of it)?

With many individuals transitioning into the recently booming field of instructional design, these questions are asked frequently and even from people who are in the field and want to level up.

So... 💡

Look no further as we have got the necessary ID mage that will guide us out of this maze backed up by his own experience, knowledge and actually a complete book that talks about this in our next episode of the (Experiencing Learning Podcast)🎙️: Dr. Luke Hobson, EdD

Dr. Luke is a Senior Instructional Designer and Program Manager at MIT, an Instructor at Southern New Hampshire University, the host of the Dr. Luke Hobson Podcast and YouTube Channel, and the author of the book, What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming an Instructional Designer.

His philosophy on learning comes from MIT, which is mens et manus or mind and hand. He believes in providing practical applications to develop real tangible skills. Hobson’s superpower is being able to take complex ideas and translate them into simple lessons.

He shares his lessons via podcast, blog, YouTube, courses, and his book with detailed steps to help educators create meaningful online learning experiences.
